This summer my girls and I are on a search for free art! We enjoy creating our own art at home, but now that my girls are older we are looking for new ways to appreciate art, and inspire our creativity. The number one item on our Summer Bucket list this year is a visit to Storm King Art Center. Thankfully, the last Thursday of the month (July & August) is FREE admission day!

I packed up a picnic basket full of our favorite snacks, as well as some paper and pencils in case inspiration should find us, and hit the road. We tailgated in the parking lot before our adventure began. (There is a cafe onsite if you choose not to pack a lunch).

As soon as we finished lunch my kids were off and running! Like two kids in a candy story they couldn’t wait for another taste! They ran to the next sculpture, and the next and the next. They asked me questions like, “mom, what does this look like to you?” and “mom how does this piece make you feel?” (I should mention here they did just graduate an art based preschool. I’m not quizzing them about art and feelings 🙂 ).

Located in New Windsor, Storm King offers 500 beautifully landscaped acres to walk, and 100 sculptures to view. By “view” I mean most of the pieces are sited outside and several stories tall! You can’t miss ANY of these sculptures!

We were so excited to run into friends we have missed for the last year! It was like one giant, outdoor play date. Although there are only a few exhibits attendees are encouraged to interact with (aka kids can climb on), there is still plenty to keep kids occupied. My girls and their friends loved rolling down the hills together, running through the meadows and looking ahead to find the next exhibit. We brought along bubble wands too!

There are plenty of paved roadways that make this park stroller friendly. If you, or your little one gets too tired there is a tram that transports attendees through the park. There are several bathrooms available (they give you a map upon entry) and water fountains for water refills. Be sure to bring PLENTY of bug spray as the ticks were out in full force. I have never pulled a tick off of either of my children until our visit here.

We spent four hours at Storm King and we still did not get to see everything! As a follow up to our day I am printing out pictures of the art we found so the girls can recreate their favorites using Play Dough. It will be a great rainy day activity! We can’t wait to go back to see the other side of the park we missed! Another free art day? Sign me up!

What are some of your favorite places to visit to find free art?
